So if none of the products on the market will give you what you are looking for, what is the point of this article?  There is actually a product that does work, but you will not find it by Googling “body cleansing”.  It is so obvious, that you are going to mad at me for even bringing it up.  It is water.  Good old fashioned, plain water.  Here is why:

Our bodies are made up primarily of water. According to wikipedia: “Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water by weight. Blood contains almost 70% water, body fat contains 10% water and bone has 22% water. Skin also contains much water. The human body is about 60% water in adult males and 55% in adult females.” Now, keep in mind that that is on average.  If you are overweight, the percentage of water goes down.

Since such a high percentage of our body is water, it plays an elemental role in discharging waste from our body.  In fact, of the three primary methods for extracting waste from our body (defecation, urination, and sweat), two of them are almost entirely water, and the third relies on water absorption from the large intestine.  If enough water is not consumed, the body goes into a state of dehydration, and the body is much less efficient at pretty much everything it does.

Look at it this way: Picture your body as a fluid machine.  Blood is flowing throughout a complex network of pathways, delivering oxygen, nutrients, and the like to all parts of your body.  All of a sudden, the fluid gets thicker and thinker until it is more like a syrup.  it has to work harder and harder to get where it needs to go, and drops a lot of its “payload” in the process.  That is basically what happens during dehydration.

The result is that you feel listless, get headaches, gain weight, and feel just plain bad.  Chronic dehydration can also cause kidney stones as well as a variety of other health complications.  So what does that have to do with the body cleanse concept?  Simple, water plays a crucial part in not only delivering oxygen to your system, but in helping with the absorption and digestion of food.  This means that you body will be more efficient at processing everything that comes into your body.  This means less waste.

Water is also very important for your kidneys and liver, which are the “waste management” centers of your body.  Plenty of water will help them to do their job of directing waste and toxins to the appropriate places.  Also, in the case of the liver, water helps the liver to process fat and deliver nutrients to where they are needed most.  Your liver performs over 500 different functions within a few minutes of consuming food or drink.  The kidneys filter your entire body a little over twelve times an hour.  Water keeps them doing their job efficiently.

Here is the part that is going to really get you mad.  You have likely seen testimonial after testimonial of people using a colon cleansing product and rave about how they felt great a few days after the regimen.  They will tell you that they felt “fresh”, invigorated, full of energy, etc.  How do you dispute those claims?  People actually do feel that way after taking these products.  The answer is simple.  Every product out there tells you that you need to drink plenty of water with their product in order for the product to work.  The feeling that they get is from the water!

I will prove it to you.  Take this test:

Drink two full glasses of water before going to bed tonight (16 oz total). In the morning, drink a glass of water first thing.  Then drink a glass an hour for the next four hours.  Throughout the day, drink four more glasses of water.  Drink more if your exercise, or consume any diuretics (coffee, milk, etc.) As a rule, drink one extra glass of water per 15 minutes of exercise or one glass per cup of coffee (or other diuretic).

I guaranty that if you do that for two days, you will feel a lot “cleaner” and full of energy.  If you have regular headaches that you cannot be explained, they will disappear.  If you have constipation, it will no longer be a problem (unless there is a more serious cause for it).  If you continue this procedure, you will also find that if you are overweight, the pounds will drop off easier than even before.  If this does not work, contact me here and I will personally buy for you the body cleansing scam product of your choice.

Yes, it is possible to cleanse your body of toxins.  The product to use is water, and it is the ONLY safe and effective way to do it.

People scare me sometimes. Not because I am afraid that they are going to attack me, or anything, but because of their determination to blindly follow false beliefs and ideas, no matter how strong the actual evidence to the contrary. I have three examples that I want to share with you that relate to the whole idea of colon cleansing.

Scary incident #1

A friend of Kathy’s is a “health nut”. Not that she lives a healthy lifestyle, based on organic foods, exercise, meditation, balance, etc. No, she is one of those that believes all of the hype about every “miracle” drug and homeopathic “remedy” out there. Obviously, she is a HUGE fan of colon cleansing.  She “cleanses” her colon regularly by whatever means is the biggest fad at the moment, absolutely ignoring all the scientific data that PROVES that colon cleansing is not only not beneficial, but can actually harm you – ESPECIALLY if you do it a lot (which she does).

If that isn’t bad enough, she always felt that what she could do in the U.S. doesn’t do a good enough job, so it was always her dream to be able to go to India where some shaman (or whatever they call which doctors there), could do a “thorough” job, complete with magic incantations, or whatever else it is they do.  She is actually planning a trip to India to do just that!

Now, is it just me, or is this kinda scary?  What would you say to your friend who wanted to do this?  Her own mother could not talk her out of it, so she asked Kathy to help.  Now, I have nothing against India, per se. I do, however, have something against stupidity.  India is not the cleanest country out there, and I am sure their health regulations are not nearly as stringent as ours.  Her friends and family are actually concerned for her life – and rightly so, I think.

Will we be able to talk her out of this insanity? Hard to say, but we’re sure going to try!

Scary incident #2

I check my stats every once in a while to see how people get to my site.  Most of my visitors get here from google searches for “colon cleansing scam”.  I think I am ranked second for that term at the moment.  I get visitors from other searches as well like colon flow scam, homemade colon cleanse and others.

A couple of days ago I looked at my stats and found something a little scary.  Someone got to my site from google by typing in “colon cleansing safe when pregnant”! I am glad they got here instead of some site that is offering specialty enemas for pregnant women, but this still kind of scares me.  I can see someone like that finding a site that offers a “dietary supplement” that is meant to help with colon cleansing that they swear is safe for pregnant women.

I am sorry, but I have a hard time with this. If you were pregnant, would you be running around searching google to find out if colon cleansing is safe for you if you are pregnant?  I hope not!  Maybe I am just old fashioned, but I believe that the place for that particular inquiry is your doctor!

Scary incident #3

Another person got to this site by going to google and typing in the phrase “homemade ex lax for baby”.  What can I even say about this?  Honestly, the first thing that I thought when I saw this was that I kind of wish that person would have chosen not to breed.  I know that sounds cruel, but that was my first thought.  I’m sure that person’s pediatrician did not recommend that they go on the internet and find a good formula for homemade ex lax. Sigh…

One last thing before I go

As long as I am on a roll here, there was one thing that I wanted to bring up.  If you look at the bottom of the left sidebar, you will find a button that tells how many spam comments have been blocked since this blogs inception.  At the time of this writing, the number is 222.

There are quite a few people who comment on this blog that actually have something useful to say.  Often, I do not get around to approving their comments because they are mixed in with all the comments left by spammers and idiots.  If your comment is one of those, I apologize.  I hope I didn’t miss yours.

For everyone wishing to comment on this blog, I want to make absolutely clear the kind of comments that I will accept here:

• I will accept comments from people who agree with my thoughts on the subject of colon cleansing.

While many people go in for colon cleansing, it is not all that hard to find a safer alternative.  If you look online you will find any number of websites advertising different homemade colon cleanse and colon cleanse recipes.  Of course, there are also many colon cleansing scam sites out there – sites that will give you recipes that are either ineffective or actually harmful to the body, so it is important to be very careful as to what treatment you decide to do. One good point to remember is that if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

If you are having medical problems, it is best that you see a doctor and speak with him/her about the correct form of treatment.  Checking out medical related web sites online is not a substitute for a doctor visit if you have health problems.  However, if you do not have serious health issues but simply want to cleanse your body from toxin build up then finding a natural formula online is one idea.  There are many different kinds of cleanses; some are one time things that you do and others involve a special diet for a few days or even a week.  Pick something that is not only realistic for you but also something that you would feel comfortable doing.

One of the oldest and yet safest methods of colon cleaning is visiting a sauna or spa.  The perspiration takes with it harmful chemicals that have built up in your system. It is no surprise that saunas have been around for the last several thousand years and are yet still very popular today.  Just make sure that you replenish with lots and lots of water.  Dehydrating yourself will not help you.

Enema detoxification is another method, albeit a lot less pleasant. An organic coffee brew is used for this and can be done in your own home, as opposed to using non-organic medicines. This doesn’t actually “detox” your body, and doing it too often can actually be harmful to your intestines.  It does, however, often give one that “fresh” feeling afterward. There is even a foot detox method where the feet are placed in a bowl with salt water and ion generators. This particular method, however, focuses on getting rid of metal toxins in the body.  Whether or not it actually works is debatable.

There are also a number of special colon cleansing teas that are said to perform wonders when it comes to colon cleansing.  Drinking an organic tea may be just the thing for you, especially if you are already a tea person.  It is important to remember, however, that when it comes to herbs and teas, you should follow the directions on the package carefully.  Many people feel that when it comes to organic medicine alternatives, one can take as much as one wants without negative repercussions because it is all natural. This is a very dangerous fallacy. Herbs and teas, while they are all natural, can have negative side effects. Mother Nature has some pretty powerful stuff and taking too much of it can be bad for you.  If you do have any negative side affects or allergic reactions, then it goes without saying that you should stop whatever treatment you are taking and if needed get help from a medical professional.

If you are pregnant or nursing then it is very important to research whatever medicine or herbal treatment you are considering using.  Visiting a sauna or spa is not recommended for pregnant women and some kinds of medicines and herbal treatments can be harmful to the unborn baby, or pass into the breast milk if you are nursing.  Be very careful about what kinds of treatments you do; it is quite likely that the foot detox would be your best bet in this kind of situation, or perhaps you may find it better to wait for some time and do a different detox later.

Those of you that have read other posts on this site know that I am not a proponent of colon cleansing.  I have not only tried Bowtrol (as well as a few others), and done extensive research as to the need to “cleanse”, and the effectiveness of these products.  Despite the facts, however, masses of people still want this stuff to work and want to feel like they’re doing themselves some good by using these products.  My point here is to at least try to advise the safest alternatives.

To be honest, the only truly safe way to “detoxify” your body is to drink a lot of water, get plenty of exercise, and eat natural, healthy foods that are high in dietary fiber.  For those of you who still feel you need to detox, try one of the safer methods above.

*Update – I just recently spoke with an associate of mine that reminded me of the benefits of yoga when it comes to getting your body in balance with itself.  He says that yoga is an awesome way to feel healthy, fit, and yes, even “detoxified”.  This is not the first time I have heard this, and since yoga is both healthy and safe, I am going to look into trying it.  If you want to try yoga, you can try reading this article on the best yoga dvd for beginners.

…are some of the remedies of yester-year. Although they provide some temporary symptomatic relief, they did not go far into the colon to address the buildup of toxins. As manufacturers went to work in labs creating capsules and potions, holistic practitioners did the same in experimenting with homemade colon cleanse recipes.

Among the lists of ingredients there are a few that are known to aid in digestion or have fiber like qualities. Those include:

1. Wheat
2. Aloe Vera
3. Flax Seed
4. Acai juice
5. Bentonite Clay
6. Senna
7. Cascara Sagrada
8. Psyillium

The first four on the list have safe and natural fiber benefits as long as the aloe vera does not have aloin, which is banned in the US. Incidentally, it is the aloin that causes the laxative affect. Flax seed is the only listed ingredient with proven benefits other than fiber to aid in cleansing the colon without harmful side effects. The second four ingredients have to be used with strong caution. The psyillium and bentonite clay has to be flushed through the system lest cause blockages in the colon. Senna and cascara sagrada can have more violent side effects if used incorrectly, or by those already experiencing problems.

A couple of more recently recommended sources are Colonix, Colpurin and Blessed Herbs which all have some level of the ingredients that could cause problems. Half of these products stick to walls and crevices of the colon. Oxy powder is the only product that mixes oxygen and water for a more safe approach. This method even causes liquid stools in most people. These main ingredients are used in an array of over the counter relief. Homemade colon cleanse usually involves enemas of some sort or require the mixing of herbs.

Some of the more popular enemas still only penetrate a small portion of the colon. It does not have the affect of an irrigation of the colon for instance, although it falls under the same procedures. Some of the more popular enemas are:

• Yogurt
• Coffee & Teas
• Vinegar
• Garlic
• Juices
• Wheat& Barley grasses
• Epsom salt
• Olive oil

To correct bacterial flora it is even recommended to use yellow baby stool. Green stool indicates a lack of balance between good and bad bacteria. Yogurt is good only if it contains live bacteria cultures. Care has to be given not to use the wrong compound and measurements when making homemade colon cleanse. Herbs in capsule form are subject to be a colon cleansing scam.

Since herbs are not yet regulated, colon cleanse manufacturers can manipulate the percentage of active ingredients to make a higher profit. The most active ingredient in capsule form is going to be fiber based or laced with one or more of the ingredients that could cause potential problems.

It seems the best way to maintain a healthy colon is to start with a colon cleanse supervised by a doctor. Eating fruits and vegetables  (along with other “fat burning food“) coupled with exercise is the best  free homemade colon cleanse available. Consistency will avoid desperation and the possibility of falling prey to the latest colon cleansing scam.

If you read my previous posts, you already know how I was introduced to colon cleansing products and what they are.  You know that I have taken them as has my girlfriend.  You know that there was a colon cleansing product that actually did help with Kathy’s constipation and that she recommended that I try it for diarrhea. Now on to the “brass tacks”:

First of all, there are hundreds of companies in the colon cleansing supplement industry.  Bowtrol is the one that we took that helped some, although we did try others. First I will tell you what it did do:

• It did help with Kathy’s constipation
• It did help with my diarrhea
• It did reduce Kathy’s feeling of being “bloated”

What it did not do:

• It did not help either of us to get into better shape
• It did not give us the ability to better digest our food
• Neither of us lost any weight
• It did not give either of us a “fresh” feeling of being detoxified
• It did not significantly increase our energy

Here is the truth behind it:  The benefits of colon cleansing were scientifically debunked years ago.  While they do have some minor benefits, these same benefits can be had from proper nutrition, without the risks of using colon cleansing products.  I told you before that it was hard for both of us to get the proper nutrition, given her busy schedule and my limited capacities.  This lack of nutrition and proper exercise was the biggest contributor to our problems.

We had to find a way to get our bodies to be ready to utilize the food we ate without a lot of exercise, and without diet pills, supplements, etc.  We had to come up with a plan that we could stick to.  We needed to find a way to do all of this, without feeling like we were sacrificing. We actually found a way that did not require us to take unsafe supplements or spend a lot of time exercising or count calories or anything like that – something that allowed us to be friends with our food and finally get healthy again.

Did I say “unsafe supplements”?  How can an herbal supplement be unsafe?  Here are some cold, hard facts about colon cleansing supplements that the supplement companies do NOT want you to know:

Nutritional supplements are not regulated by the FDA. That means that there is no governing body that tells these companies that their supplements have to actually contain what they say they do!  The pills you are taking could be powdered sugar in a capsule, and you would never know.

Colon cleansing products can do damage do your colon. Colon cleansers use laxatives and other products that interfere with your colon’s ability to absorb moisture.  This can cause dependence on laxatives for regular bowel movements.  They can also cause an electrolyte imbalance which can actually lead to heart failure.  Frequent use of oral laxatives can also cause drug absorption issues.  There are many more dangers as well.

Your Colon does not need cleansing. Our bodies are naturally capable of eliminating waste on its own.  There are countless ads that show the “waste” that passed through the test subject due to the cleansing product.  The fact is that there has never been a surgery or autopsy performed that found someone with waste build up in their colon! The “waste debris” shown in the ads was the product itself!

Hi, this is James again, and I wanted to use this article to give you a little information about what colon cleansing is and what colon cleansing products are supposed to do. Before reading this article, I recommend you first read my last article HERE.

Colon cleansing is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on “flushing” the colon and lower intestinal tract to remove toxins and fecal waste. There are basically two forms of colon cleansing products: colon hydrotherapy and oral cleansing supplements.

Colon hydrotherapy (also called colonic irrigation or colonics) is the injection of water, usually mixed with herbs or other ingredients into the rectum. Oral cleansing supplements are dietary supplements usually comprised of herbs, dietary fiber, or laxatives. Colon cleansing clinics will most often utilize colonics as their preferred method of colon cleansing, while most of the products available online and over the counter at retail drug stores are the oral variety. There are, however, “enema kits” available from these retailers as well.

The use of colon cleansing dates back to the ancient Egyptians, who believed that waste would accumulate within the intestinal tract and rot. The decomposition would breed toxins that would then travel to the circulatory system and cause fever and other symptoms. These beliefs were adopted by the Greeks, who took it a step further, believing that these toxins would create an imbalance in the human body. Colon cleansing and the theories developed by the Egyptians and the Greeks actually appeared to have some scientific evidence to back it up through the 19th and early 20th centuries. Then in 1919, a Journal of the American Medical Association article titled Origin of the so-called auto-intoxication symptom marked the beginning of the end for colon cleansing and the “auto-intoxication” theory in the medical community. Advances in medical science provided more and more evidence to suggest that not only do colon cleansing products do nothing to “detoxify” the body, but that the use of these products can actually be harmful to your colon and digestive tracts.

Despite this evidence, colon cleansing is still alive and well in the alternative medicine community, and has recently gained increasing popularity. Colon cleansing products currently represent a multi-million dollar industry. Companies that manufacture and sell these products claim that their products can cure headache, irritability, loss of appetite, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, constipation, obesity… One of the most popular of these products is Bowtrol. So, the bottom line is: Are any of these claims true? Do colon cleansing products live up to their claims? Are they dangerous? I will explore these questions in my next article. See you then!

First, about me: I suffered a few injuries while working as a service plumber for about 18 years. These injuries caused pretty severe spinal problems in my neck and back, as well as hip problems. With these injuries, it is very difficult to get any real exercise. Cooking regular meals is difficult, because I cannot stand for longer than a minute or two at a time, and I usually need a cane to walk. Kathy is so busy with school that she rarely has time to cook.

I was feeling sluggish a lot and gaining weight. I was always tired. Kathy told me, over and over, that all of the pain medications and stuff were building up in my body and I should look at some kind of product that can flush the residue out of my system. She had heard a lot about colon cleansing products and how they are supposed to help detoxify the body and remove build-up in the bowels. I was also having problems with diarrhea, and she said a colon cleanse would help that as well.

Now, Kathy started looking into colon cleansing products for a different reason – constipation. Her busy schedule made it hard for her to get enough exercise as well. She was not eating right which was causing her to have constipation. It was Kathy that first started looking into and finally trying colon cleansers. She actually tried a few of them before finding one that didn’t make her feel “icky”. The one she liked was called “Bowtrol” (in case you are interested, click the name to get more info about them). It did seem to help her with her constipation, and that added some weight to her argument that I should try it as well.

Now, there is more to the story here than “she tried Bowtrol and it worked”. Is colon cleansing a scam?
